Atkins supported the criteria development and the assessment of suitability and risk for future site selection of nuclear power stations. Criteria based on issues such as environmental constraints, seismic risk and population demographics are being mapped out using geographic information systems (GIS) to inform the development of discretionary and exclusionary criteria for assessing potential sites for new installations.

Atkins collated large amounts of geospatial data for the UK from various national agencies. The data was processed, combined and integrated into a GIS. The GIS allows for varying criteria to be tested and to model the outcome for suitable sites. In addition, the Atkins team supported the data collection for the strategic environmental assessment on the proposed National Policy Statement for Nuclear Power Generation.
