Atlanta International Airport

USA | SECTOR: Aviation

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s Runway 10-28, also known as the fifth runway, has been called the most important runway in America.

Atkins provided site preparation, paving and lighting, and construction documentation to bring this new 9,000ft runway to reality, and to alleviate delays at the world’s busiest airport.

This runway project required over 17.5 million cubic yards of embankment – transported from a local quarry via a five-mile conveyor system – and the crossing of 10 lanes of I-285, resulting in a runway over 60 feet higher than the interstate highway in some locations.
