Atkins prepared a World Heritage Site Management Plan for the Bahla Fort and Oasis settlement in Oman to protect the area from further degradation. The 13km site was included on the World Heritage in Danger List due to the vulnerable condition of its earthen structures, erosion, limited planning controls and hydrological problems.

Our multidisciplinary team of heritage specialists, urban planners and designers, landscape, environmental and institutional specialists developed an understanding of the site in its cultural, physical and social context and set out a strategic framework for the transformation of the site. It resulted in the Bahla Fort and Oasis settlement being removed from the list of threatened sites. The project was undertaken in accordance with the Ministries and UNESCO requirements, international conservation charters and the principles of sustainable tourism.
