750V Migration Feasibility Study

UK | SECTOR: Mass Transit

Atkins helped London Underground upgrade its sub-surface lines to include new rolling stock, signalling, track and power infrastructure. The upgrade included a proposal to boost the traction supply voltage from 630V to 750V to improve the performance of the new trains, save energy and reduce London Underground’s carbon footprint.

Atkins undertook a series of feasibility studies to assess the impact of increasing traction voltage in relation to the safety, reliability and performance of the different railway aspects.

This included assessing power and signalling assets and rolling stock, using safety risk assessment, failure modes and effects analysis and whole-life costing techniques, supplemented by site surveys and inspections.
