When did you join Atkins?

August 2000.

Why did you join Atkins?

I was looking for a company that I can develop my career. Atkins is a well known company in Hong Kong and working in the tunneling department is challenging and interesting for me.

What did you do before you joined Atkins?

I was studying in the University and I joined Atkins on graduation.

How would you describe your role and responsibilities?

I am leading a team to deliver packages which are mainly related to tunnel and deep excavation design to the clients. I am also the Project Manager for some projects to ensure our services are delivered on time, of high quality and within budget.

How do you describe what you do to friends and family?

I design and develop engineer solutions on how to build the infrastructures that cannot been seen from the ground level.

Do you have any professional accreditations?

I am the Corporate Member of Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Hong Kong Institution of Engineer (HKIE).

What key projects have you worked on?

Dubai Metro Redline and Greenline, MTRC’s South Island Line Contract 902 and Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Contract 24.

What are you currently working on?

The MTRC’s South Island Line Contract 902, which is a new railway line to link the northern and southern side of the Hong Kong Island. I am the Design Manager for the project and Atkins is the designer for the Contractor.

What achievement are you most proud of?

The Dubai Metro project - it’s a complex and large size project which involved a lot of people from all over the world. We successfully completed the project with high quality and I have gained much satisfaction from it.

What’s the most technically challenging tunnelling project you’ve worked on at Atkins, and in a few words, say why it was challenging?

The Dubai Metro project - in particularl the adit construction and design. Our team worked hard with with the Contractor to develop procedures and solutions to minimize the risks during the construction of the adits using mining method.

How has your career developed at Atkins?

I joined Atkins as graduate engineer. I was given a very comprehensive training and have obtained the chartership in 5 years. Since then I’ve been given more responsibility and opportunities to get involved in many major projects.

How have you been supported during your career development?

I have been given a very good guidance from my senior and support from colleagues.

How do tunnelling engineers and Atkins make a difference?

We  play an important role on many infrastructure development such as railway and road network to improve our life, and also reducing disturbance to the public by making use of the underground space.

How would you describe the culture at Atkins?

It’s an energetic company with a very good working environment.
